Decimal to fraction
In daily life, we often use different words to express the
same thing like we could describe the same laptop as small or tiny or little.
All these words mean that the laptop is not big. Fractions, decimals, and
percentages are same as the words tiny, small and little; they are all just
different ways of expressing parts of a whole.
Sometimes it is useful to convert one type of number into
another type for example,
It is much easy to add ¼ and 0.5 if we turn 0.5 into a
fraction similarly the for some people the addition is easier if 0.5 is
converted into a fraction.
In mathematics one of the basic concepts are decimals and
fractions
Before going deep how the conversion of decimal to fraction
takes place it is very important to latch on about what decimal and fraction are?
Decimals denote to set up of numbers and arithmetic based
on the number ten, tenth parts and powers of ten.
Fractions are a numerical sum that is not a whole number.
Approaching towards our main topic while converting decimal
to a fraction you need to keep few points in mind.
1. Write
down the decimal divided by one.
2. Multiply
both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. (For
example – if there are three numbers after decimal point use 1000, etc.)
3. Reduce
the fraction.
Example: Convert 0.625 into a fraction
Step1. Write down 0.625
divided by 1
0.625/1
Step2. Multiply both top and
bottom by 1000 (3 digits after the decimal
Point.)
625/1000
Step3. Reduce the fraction
625/1000 = 25/40 = 5/8
Answer = 5/8
REMARK: If you are doing the conversion of decimals to 0.333… (Here 3 are
repeating forever which in mathematics we call 3 recurring) then we follow the special
argument. In this case, we write:
0.333…/1
Then multiply both top and
bottom by 3:
0.333/1 = 0.333/1
And 0.999=1
Answer
= 1/3
Another method can be the use
of decimal to fraction calculator.
Steps for decimal to fraction converter:
Step1. Number: 0.25
Step2. Whole. Decimal: 0.25
As a decimal fraction: 25/100
The Greatest Common factor of
25 and 100 is: 25
Reduce the fraction: (25/25)/ (100/25)
Simplified: 1/4
Another method could be by using place values:
0.75
Tenths
In decimals, the number
immediately to the right of the decimal point is in the tenths place
The place to the right of the
tenths place is the hundredths place.
0.75
To convert a decimal first, we
will check the place value of the last number to the right.
0.75
In 0.75, 5is in the hundredths
place.
0.75 = 75/100
This means our decimal is
equal to 75 hundredths. 75 hundredths can also be written as 75/100.
Now we have our fraction. But
it is always better to reduce fractions it makes it easy to read, process and
for further calculations.
Thus conversion either from
decimal to fraction or fraction to decimal is an important mathematical tool.
