Fraction
to decimal
In mathematics one of the basic concepts is
fractions and decimal. Before yawning about the conversion of the fraction to
decimal we need to know what fraction and decimal are.
Fractions are a numerical sum that is not
a whole number. There are three types of fractions namely proper fractions, improper
fractions, and mixed fractions.
Decimals denote to set up of numbers and
arithmetic based on the number ten, tenth parts and powers of ten.
Moving towards our main topic conversion
of fractions to decimal we need to keep in mind some of the following steps:
Step 1: Take a number and multiply it by
the bottom of the fraction to make it 10, 100, 1000 or
10000 or any 1 which is followed by 0s.
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by
that particular number in the given example.
Step 3: Now you have to write just the top
number and put the decimal point to the correct place.
Some
more points we need to ponder while solving fraction to decimal conversion.
Fractions and decimal numbers are two
different ways of representing numbers which are less than one. A number which
is less than one can be represented in both the forms either decimal or
fraction. A fraction consists of three parts numerator, slash, and denominator.
The denominate represents how many equal parts are there in whole.
For example, a cake can be cut into 8
pieces so the denominator will be 8 and if we cut the same cake into 12 pieces
then it’s denominator will be 12. The numerator a part or parts of the whole
substance. One piece of the whole cake would be represented by the numerator by
“1”. Decimals do not represent as slash; they are represented by decimal
numbers to the left of the numbers. The easiest way of converting fraction to a
decimal number is by division problem.
For
example, the fraction 3/4, divide 3 by 4
¾ becomes 0.75
The fraction
15/8, divide 15 by 8
15/8 becomes 1.875
Example:
Convert ¾ to a decimal
Step 1: we can multiply
4 by 25 to become 100
Step 2: Multiply top and
bottom by 25:
*25
¾ = 75/100
*25
Step 3: Write down 75 with the decimal
point 2spaces from the right (because 100 has 2 zeros);
Simplified = 0.75
Example:
Convert 1/3 to a decimal
Step
1: There is no way to multiply 3 to become 10 or 100 or any “1 followed by 0s
“, but we can calculate an approximate decimal by choosing to multiply
by, say, 333
Step 2: Multiply top and
bottom by 333
*333
1/3 = 333/999
*333
Step 3: Now, 999 is nearly
1,000, so let us write down 333 with decimal point 3 spaces from the right
(because 1,000 has 3 zeros):
Simplified =
0.333(accurate to only 3 decimal places)
The following steps and examples will help
you to understand the conversion of fractions to decimal in more appropriate
and easy way.
