Expansions & factorisations/1
Expansion is usually due to heating. When substances are heated, the molecular bonds between their particles are weakened, and the particles move faster, causing the substance to expand. A number or other mathematical expression written in an extended form. For example, a2 + 2ab + b2 is the expansion of (a + b)2 Factorising To factorise an expression such x2 + 5x + 6, you need to look for two numbers that add up to make 5 and multiply to give 6 The factor pairs of 6 are: 1 and 6 2 and 3 2 and 3 add up to 5. So: (x +2) (x+3) = x2 + 5x + 6 Factorising expressions gets trickier with negative numbers.
