Lillimilura Police Station
Lillimilura Police Station
The ruins of Lillimilura Police Station are located in the picturesque Windjana Gorge National Park. It was at this site in 1894 that the Aboriginal tracker known as Pigeon gained his outlaw status and began a resistance against the white settlers of his homeland.
Pigeon killed a policeman at the Lillimilura Police Station, then set his people free and fled. It took three years for him to be captured and killed, and during that time he became a hero amongst his people. Explore the 1884 ruins and try to imagine the mutiny that took place.
Stop in at the Derby Visitors Centre and collect a booklet about the Pigeon Heritage Trail and the story of Pigeon before commencing your hour and a half drive to the national park. Stay overnight at one of two campsites in the national park to take advantage of the spectacular gorges and explore some of the 2,000 hectares of park.
Lillimilura Police Station is just four hours drive east of Broome and a two and a half hour flight from Perth.
