Sydney Tutor in Essay Writing, Philosophy
Hi, my name is Jack and I'm a philosophy single honours graduate from London with a passion for teaching, discussing and writing philosophy. I've moved to Sydney for a personal research sabbatical before I continue my own academic career with postgraduate study and the pursuit of a phd. In the meantime, I would love to be able to assist prospective students with their own studies in philosophy. It is my belief that philosophy is a subject that is at its best when shared and explored out loud. As a humanities subject, there is inevitably going to be periods of solitary study and trawling through countless books, articles and journal entries. But unlike other humanities subjects, philosophy really comes alive when it ignites group debate, discussion and argument. As such, students of philosophy require a forum or outlet where they can develop a toolset for critical thinking that will sharpen their verbal and written argumentative styles and ultimately their minds. This emphasis on philosophy as an animate and lively subject is at the core of my teaching ethos, and something that I bring to the forefront of my lessons by encouraging my students to critically assess arguments, theories and hypotheses in a rigorous philosophical manner. I can't stress this enough, my style of tutoring is not just about studying philosophy, but engaging in it! With this in mind, I tailor my services in order to provide extensive training in: 1) Philosophical ideas and theories: The 'content' of philosophy courses, which include looking at a wide array of subjects in analytical (or theoretical), practical and historical philosophy. Areas include (but aren't limited to): - Philosophy of the mind* - Cognitive studies* - Metaphysics - Philosophy of Science - Contemporary and historical political philosophy - Ethics and meta ethics* - Continental philosophy incl. 'Pessimism' and 'Existentialism' - Philosophy in film and literature - Classical philosophy - Marxism - Philosophy of religion - And more! (Starred areas indicate my own current areas of research, and therefore are areas of particular interest to me. Although I have completed past research in all of the areas listed.) 2) Research skills: How to effectively and efficiently research, including identifying and choosing appropriate source material, how to manage your time effectively and how to hone your critical thinking. 3) Essay writing: How to construct an argument, how to deconstruct the arguments of others, how to employ a wide range of essay writing techniques, how to select and use secondary material for maximum benefit, how to reference properly alongside other bibliographic skills and how to best understand the marking criteria of your examiners! 4) Presentation skills: With the increasing popularity of using presentations as a method of assessment in philosophy, understanding how to summarise arguments in a concise, entertaining yet professional way is proving to be a crucial aspect of academic philosophical study. I can provide students with assistance in developing the written, verbal and visual skills required for presentational assessments. Sessions are a minimum of one hour, but can be extended further by half an hour or hour blocks. However, due to the nature and sometimes intensity of philosophical work it is recommended that sessions do not regularly exceed an hour and a half, so that content is not rushed and time is allowed to reflect on the work completed. I encourage a lively atmosphere, and therefore look to employ a range of research and revision techniques -- you are not paying to sit around and read a book (or have someone read a book to you!). Finding the right tutor can be difficult, and no style of tutoring works for everyone. That's why I offer a complimentary session in order to discuss what you're looking for in a tutor and establish whether or not I can be of assistance to you. Similarly, I don't believe in long term contracts, so should you change your mind after a few sessions then we can part ways hassle free (although a weeks notice prior to the session is required). However, special rates apply to sessions brought in bulk as well as group sessions. These can be negotiated in person or via email. My availability for now is extremely flexible, and can again be discussed either in person or via email. PLEASE NOTE: For the time being, I am ONLY offering my tuition services to undergraduate/university level students of 18 years or above.

Qualifications
(Relevant to the study of Philosophy) 2009-2011, Hayes Secondary School, England: Awarded an 'A' grade in A level philosophy and ethics (Equivalent to HSE) 2011-2014, University of Roehampton, London, England: Awarded a first class degree in single honours philosophy - Consistently achieved first class marks and top percentages in all modules taken (This has been extremely difficult to translate into its Australian equivalent, but based on hours of trawling through the internet and comparing grade charts, percentages of students awarded top marks in both countries and reading the opinions of both students and academic staff, this roughly translates to the equivalent of a High Distinction in Australia. However, this is a rough equivalency, as an accurate one is almost impossible in part due to the structural differences of degree programs in the UK and Australia.)
