Evaluating Expressions
An expression is a mathematical statement which uses numbers, operations and variables to make a statement. An equation is a statement that states two EXPRESSIONS are equal. For example, an expression could be 1 + 1. An equation could be 1 + 1 = 2, since it states that the expression on the left of the equals sign holds the same value as the expression to the right.
Let’s learn how to evaluate an expression using the following example.
Consider the expression
3x +2
Evaluate the expression where the variable x could have 3 possible values 2, 4, 8
When x=2
3 * 2 +2 =8
When x=4
3* 4 +2 = 14
When x=8
3*8 +2 =26
