I've been tutoring beginner guitar for two years now and see my students for hour- long lessons once a week. I do at-home tutoring with all my current students at their homes, I find it helps a lot to be in comfortable environment. A lot of my students have been girls and shy kids who feel more comfortable with a female teacher, and with somebody who understands them better and can relate. I also teach teens and adults! Many of the music schools or school-offered programs available to students don't really take into account what the student wants to get out of learning the instrument; I've had personal experience with this. As well as setting students up with all the essential tools for mastering guitar, I like to ask the students what they want to learn. I want them to be excited about playing and learning, that's what is most important. We have a lot of fun during lessons, learning our favourite songs and challenging ourselves just that little bit more every week. Recently I've even introduced singing and playing into lessons with more advanced students, usually neither of us can sing at all, but the students end up having fun, coming out of their shell more, and it helps to take guitar playing to the next level. It gives me great personal satisfaction and such a good feeling to see a student improving and doing things they always said they would never be able to do.
