Definition of Billion

Definition of Billion

An (American) billion is \(1,000\) million. So, it is \(1,000,000,000\), which is 1 followed by 9 zeroes, or \(1 \times 10^9\) in scientific notation.

A British billion is one million millions, or \(1,000,000,000,000,000\). There are 12 zeroes there, so this is \(1 \times 10^{12}\).

Most of the time, when people talk about a billion of something, they mean \(1 \times 10^9\).
