Definition of Binary Operation | SubjectCoach

A binary operation in an operation that takes two numbers as inputs.

Some examples of binary operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The output of a binary operation must come from the same set as its inputs.

You can combine binary operations to build new binary operations.

For example, the operation \(@\) defined on the left is a binary operation that has been built out the binary operations of multiplication and subtraction. Let's use the definition to calculate \(2 @ 3\):

\( \begin{align*} 2@3 &= 2(3) - 3\\ &= 6 - 3\\ &= 3 \end{align*} \)
