The golden mean is another name for the golden ratio.
The golden ratio is the number \(\varphi = \dfrac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2} = 1.6180339887 \dots\).
The golden ratio features in the works of some artists and architects such as Le Corbusier and Dali as it is believed to provide a pleasing appearance. It also appears in some patterns in nature such as the spirals in the nautilus shell and the spirals formed by emerging fern leaves.
