Frequently Asked Questions

How do function transformations work in VCE Maths?

A transformed function has the form y = a·f(x − h) + k. The parameter a controls vertical stretch and reflection, h shifts the graph left or right, and k shifts it up or down. Our interactive lab lets you adjust these with sliders and see the graph change in real time.

What is a derivative and how does it relate to a tangent line?

The derivative f'(x) gives the slope of the tangent line to the curve at any point x. A positive derivative means the function is increasing, negative means decreasing, and zero indicates a turning point. Our derivative visualiser lets you drag a point along any curve to see the tangent line update in real time.

How do you add and multiply complex numbers on the complex plane?

Addition of complex numbers corresponds to vector addition on the complex plane. Multiplication involves multiplying the moduli and adding the arguments (angles). Our complex numbers explorer shows both operations geometrically on an interactive complex plane.

Is this free for VCE students?

Few are free. Most interactive experiments in the Mathematics Playground require a VCE subscription.

Which VCE subjects are covered?

The playground covers VCE Mathematical Methods (functions, calculus, probability) and VCE Specialist Mathematics (complex numbers, vectors, differential equations). New experiments are added regularly.
