How the Writing Workshop Works

Three simple steps that build real writing skill: learn a technique, practise it, and get specific feedback.

1

Learn the Technique

Each lesson teaches one writing skill - from opening with a strong hook to building a convincing argument. Students see model examples and a clear breakdown of what makes writing work.

2

Practise With Real Prompts

Choose from over 800 prompts across scholarship, selective entry and NAPLAN formats. Students write with a built-in timer and word counter, so practice feels like the real exam.

3

Get Clear Feedback

The AI tutor marks each essay against the actual exam criteria, points out grammar and punctuation to fix, and shows an improved version to learn from. Crucially, it coaches the writing - it never writes the essay for the student. Each report uses 1 AI credit from the account balance.

What the AI Checks in Every Essay

Each essay is scored against the same criteria that scholarship, selective entry and NAPLAN assessors use - so the feedback matches the real exam.

Answers the Question

Did the essay stay on the actual prompt? The AI checks whether the argument or story answers what was asked, instead of drifting off topic.

Personal Voice

Does the writing sound like a real person? Markers reward a genuine, sincere voice over a flat list of achievements or borrowed opinions.

Sense of Purpose

Do the ideas add up to something the writer clearly believes in? The AI looks for conviction and a clear point of view.

Storytelling

Does the essay show rather than tell? The AI looks for specific examples - a moment, a challenge, a change - instead of vague summary.

Clear Structure

Is the essay easy to follow, with a clear beginning, middle and end? Do the ideas flow in a sensible order?

Insight & Maturity

Does the writing show real reflection - what the student learned or how they grew - rather than just what happened?

Spelling & Grammar

Grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure. Mistakes are pointed out with a plain-English explanation and a suggested fix.

What Winning Scholarship Essays Have in Common

Our AI specifically checks for these traits that separate good essays from winning ones.

Strong Hook

Winning essays open with an anecdote, a compelling story, or an intriguing fact - never with "In this essay I will discuss..." Our AI analyses your opening and suggests stronger alternatives if needed.

No Clichés

Phrases like "I want to change the world" or "since the dawn of time" tell the marker you haven't thought deeply enough. The AI spots these tired phrases and helps you replace them with something personal and specific.

Deep Reflection

The best essays focus on what the writer learned from a challenge or failure - not just what happened. Our AI measures whether your writing shows shallow description or genuine insight.

Word Count Compliance

Scholarship, selective entry and NAPLAN writing tasks have strict formatting expectations. The AI checks whether your essay is the right length and flags underdeveloped ideas or unnecessary padding.

What You'll Learn in Each Lesson

Every lesson follows the same clear three steps: learn the technique, study a model, then write.

Learn

Expert Teaching

Clear, concise instruction on a specific writing technique - from crafting a thesis statement to building suspense in a narrative. Written in plain language a Year 3-10 student can follow.

Model

Worked Examples

See the technique in action with annotated examples. Compare weak writing to strong writing and understand exactly what makes the difference - just like having a tutor beside you.

Practice

Write & Get Feedback

Apply what you've learned with a guided writing task. When you're done, submit your work to the AI tutor for feedback within seconds: a score on each criterion, the mistakes to fix, and an improved version to learn from.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SubjectCoach Writing Workshop cover?

The workshop covers four tracks: Scholarship & Selective Entry Persuasive Writing, Scholarship & Selective Entry Narrative Writing, NAPLAN Persuasive Writing, and NAPLAN Narrative Writing. Each track has 5 structured lessons covering skills from prompt analysis and story planning to writing powerful conclusions and crafting tension. Students also have access to over 800 practice prompts with AI-powered feedback.

How does the AI writing feedback work?

After a writing exercise, students submit their work to the AI tutor. It marks the essay against the same criteria a real assessor uses - seven for scholarship and selective entry writing, or ten for NAPLAN - and gives a score for each. It points out grammar, spelling and punctuation to fix, spots tired clichés, comments on the opening, and shows an improved version to learn from. The feedback is warm and written in plain language, and it coaches the writing rather than writing the essay for the student. Each feedback report uses 1 AI credit.

How do feedback credits work?

Writing Workshop access is included with SubjectCoach Premium membership. Premium includes AI credits that can be used for feedback submissions, and each Writing Workshop report uses 1 AI credit. Included subscription credits reset when the subscription renews. If the account runs out, extra AI credit packs can be purchased for more submissions.

Is this workshop suitable for NAPLAN preparation?

Absolutely. The NAPLAN tracks are specifically designed around the official NAPLAN marking criteria: Audience, Text Structure, Ideas, Persuasive Devices (or Character and Setting for narrative), Vocabulary, Cohesion, Paragraphing, Sentence Structure, Punctuation, and Spelling. The AI scores essays using the same criteria NAPLAN markers use, and provides band estimates.

What makes a strong scholarship or selective entry essay?

Based on analysis of successful scholarship and selective entry writing, strong essays share common traits: they start with a strong hook (an anecdote, story, or intriguing fact), avoid clichés (like "I want to change the world"), focus on reflection and personal growth rather than just describing events, and strictly follow word count and formatting guidelines. Our AI specifically analyses these traits and gives actionable feedback to help students improve.

How much does the Writing Workshop cost?

The Writing Workshop is included with Premium membership. Basic and Advanced members need to upgrade to Premium to unlock it. It is not sold as a separate product right now.

What age group is this workshop designed for?

The workshop is designed for Australian Year 3 - 10 students (roughly ages 8-16) preparing for NAPLAN, scholarship and selective entry writing. NAPLAN writing begins in Year 3, so younger students can start early and build up. The language, examples and prompts are age-appropriate and aligned with the Australian Curriculum.

Which level should my child start at?

First pick the track that matches the exam - NAPLAN, or Scholarship & Selective Entry. Within each track, every prompt is tagged by how demanding it is: scholarship prompts are marked Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced, and NAPLAN prompts are marked Standard or Challenging. These describe the challenge of the prompt, not a year level. A younger student, or anyone new to a task, should start at the easier level and build up; a student close to an exam can push into the harder prompts. On the writing page, students also set their year level, so the word targets and the AI marking standard match their stage - a Year 3 and a Year 9 writing the same topic are each marked at their own level.

Can students review their writing feedback?

Students receive their feedback immediately after submitting a practice response, including scores, corrections, and a personalised rewrite example. The workshop currently focuses on guided practice and instant feedback rather than a separate parent or teacher progress dashboard.
