About Scientific Notation

Scientific notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a compact form. It consists of a mantissa (coefficient) multiplied by 10 raised to some power (exponent).

Format: a × 10n

  • a = mantissa (1 ≤ |a| < 10)
  • n = exponent (integer)

Examples:

Large Numbers:
  • 1,500 = 1.5 × 10³
  • 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴
  • 6,000,000 = 6.0 × 10⁶
Small Numbers:
  • 0.015 = 1.5 × 10⁻²
  • 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴
  • 0.000006 = 6.0 × 10⁻⁶

Why Use Scientific Notation?

  • Makes very large or small numbers easier to write and read
  • Simplifies calculations with extreme values
  • Shows significant figures clearly
  • Used extensively in science and engineering
