About Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a compact form. It consists of a mantissa (coefficient) multiplied by 10 raised to some power (exponent).
Format: a × 10n
- a = mantissa (1 ≤ |a| < 10)
- n = exponent (integer)
Examples:
Large Numbers:
- 1,500 = 1.5 × 10³
- 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴
- 6,000,000 = 6.0 × 10⁶
Small Numbers:
- 0.015 = 1.5 × 10⁻²
- 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴
- 0.000006 = 6.0 × 10⁻⁶
Why Use Scientific Notation?
- Makes very large or small numbers easier to write and read
- Simplifies calculations with extreme values
- Shows significant figures clearly
- Used extensively in science and engineering
