Vinculum
Definition of Vinculum
A vinculum is a horizontal line that indicates that the mathematical symbols underneath it are to be considered as one group.
For example, the horizontal line over \(x + 7\) in the picture indicates that the square root is to be taken of \((x + 7)\), not just of \(x\).
The horizontal bar separating the numerator and denominator in a fraction is also called a vinculum.
