Definition of Volume
The volume of an object is the amount of 3-dimensional space that it occupies. This term can also refer to the capacity of an object to hold a liquid or a gas.
For example, the triangular prism in the picture has a volume of \(\frac{1}{2} \times 2 \times 3 \times 4 = 12 \text{ cm}^3\).
In Australia, we use the metric system. So, the units of volume we use are cubic centimetres (\(\text{cm}^3\), cubic metres \(\text{m}^3\) and litres.
Your grandparents and any Americans you might know may be more familiar with the Imperial measurements of fluid ounces, cubic inches, cubic feet and gallons.
