Definition of FOIL method

The FOIL method is technique for remembering how to multiply two binomial expressions together.

"FOIL" stands for "First, Outermost, Innermost, Last". This is the order of multiplying the terms. You take the sum of

  • The product of the first terms from the two brackets.
  • The product of the two outermost terms.
  • The product of the two innermost terms.
  • The product of the last terms from the two brackets.

So,

(a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd

For example, \((x + 3)(y + 2) = xy + x(2) + 3y + (3)(2) = xy + 2x + 3y + 6\).
