Definition of Hemisphere

Definition of Hemisphere

A hemisphere is half a sphere.

Because the Earth is roughly spherical in shape, we divide it up into hemispheres. The part of the Earth north of the equator is called the Northern Hemisphere. We live in the Southern Hemisphere (the part of the Earth that is south of the equator). The map in the picture is of the Southern Hemisphere.

The Earth can also be divided up into Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Australia lies in the Eastern Hemisphere.
