Definition of Lease

A lease is a legal contract that states the terms under which someone, who is not the owner, may use an asset.

For example, when you rent a house, both you and the landlord sign a lease. The lease specifies things such as the amount of rent, the term of the tenancy, and your obligations with regard to caring for the property, whether you can keep a pet, and how much time the landlord may take to fix things.
