Definition of Perimeter

The perimeter is the total distance you would cover if you walked around a two-dimensional shape.

You find the perimeter by adding up all the lengths of the sides of the shape.

For example, the perimeter of the pictured shape is

\( 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 3 = 18 \text{ cm}\)

The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference.
