Definition of Absolute Value
The absolute value tells you the distance of a number from \(0\).
For example, \(5\) is \(5\) units away from zero in the positive direction. So, the absolute value of \(5\) is \(5\)
\(-6\) is \(6\) units away from zero in the negative direction. So, the absolute value of \(-6\) is \(6\).
We use vertical bars on either side of the number to indicate that we are finding its absolute value. So, for example, we would write \(|-7| = 7\).
