Definition of Arc Length
Definition of Arc Length
An arc length is the length of an arc of a circle (or any other curve)
The arc length of arc AB is the distance you travel along the circumference when you go from A to B.
For arcs in circles:
- If the angle \(\theta\) at the centre of the circle, subtending the arc, is in radians, then the arc length is equal to \(r\theta\), where \(r\) is the radius of the circle.
- If the angle \(\theta\) at the centre of the circle, subtending the arc, is given in degrees, then the arc length is equal to \(r\theta \times \dfrac{\pi}{180}\), where \(r\) is the radius of the circle.
The extra \(\dfrac{\pi}{180}\) in the second equation is the factor you need to multiply by to convert \(\theta\) from degrees to radians so that you can use the arc length formula.
