Definition of Extrema
The extrema are the largest and smallest values of a function in an interval. There may be local and global extrema.
The picture shows the extrema of a function. Extrema have two types:
- The largest values are called maxima. This is the plural of "maximum".
- The smallest values are called minima. This is the plural of "minimum".
Description
The aim of this dictionary is to provide definitions to common mathematical terms. Students learn a new math skill every week at school, sometimes just before they start a new skill, if they want to look at what a specific term means, this is where this dictionary will become handy and a go-to guide for a student.
