Definition of Expanded Notation

Expanded notation is a way of showing the place value of each digit of a numeral. It is written as the sum of the products of each digit with the number corresponding to its place value (units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on).

For example,

\(53,267 = 5 \times 10,000 + 3 \times 1,000 + 2 \times 100 + 6 \times 10 + 7 \times 1\)
in expanded notation.
