Terminating Decimal

Definition of Terminating Decimal

 

A terminating decimal is a decimal number with digits that eventually stop. They do not go on forever.

For example, 3.175 is a terminating decimal. It has three decimal digits.

4.983656 is also a terminating decimal. It has six decimal digits.


By contrast, the digits of a repeating decimal go on forever. For example, \(0.166666666 \dots \) is a repeating decimal. The digit \(6\) is repeated over and over again.
