Twelve-Hour Clock

Definition of Twelve-Hour Clock

We use a twelve-hour clock when we tell the time using AM and PM. The 12 hours from midnight to midday are the AM (or morning) hours, and the 12 hours from midday to midnight are the PM (or afternoon and night) hours. Midnight is written as \(12:00 \text{ AM}\) and midday is written as \(12:00 \text{ PM}\) in this format.

For example,

  • 5 hours and 35 minutes after midnight is written as \(5:35 \text{ AM}\).
  • 2 hours and 15 minutes after midday is written as \(2:15 \text{ PM}\). This would be written as \(14:15\) using the 24-hour clock.
