Difference of Two Squares

Definition of Difference of Two Squares

A difference of two squares is an algebraic expression with two terms that are squared and separated by a minus sign.

Some examples of differences of two squares are \(9 - x^2 = 3^2 - x^2\), \(a^2 - b^2\) and \(64x^2 - 36 = (8x)^2 - 6^2\).

There is a very useful factorisation of the difference of two squares:

\(x^2 - y^2 = (x - y)(x + y)\).
