Relative Frequency
Definition of Relative Frequency

The relative frequency of an event is the number of outcomes in which that event occurs, divided by the total number of outcomes.
For example, if 16 people out of a total of 30 people surveyed say that their favourite song is the "Three Little Fishies", then
- The frequency of people having the "Three Little Fishies" as their favourite song is \(16\), and
- The relative frequency of people having the "Three Little Fishies" as their favourite song is \(\dfrac{16}{30} = \dfrac{8}{15}\).
Another term for "relative frequency" is experimental probability.
