Repeating Decimal
Definition of Repeating Decimal
A repeating decimal is a decimal number in which a small group of digits after the decimal point are repeated over and over, forever and ever.
For example,
- \(\dfrac{2}{3} = 0.666666\dots\) is a repeating decimal (the \(6\) repeats forever and ever).
- \(\dfrac{1}{6}=0.16666\dots\) is a repeating decimal (the \(6\) repeats forever and ever).
- \(\dfrac{5}{11} = 0.4545454545\dots\) is a repeating decimal (the "\(45\)" repeats forever).
Sometimes we indicate the part of a repeating decimal that repeats by placing dots over the first and last digits of the repeating group of decimal places. Another way to show this is to place a line over the group of repeating digits.
Another name for a repeating decimal is a "recurring decimal".
