Relatively Prime
Definition of Relatively Prime
We say that two numbers are relatively prime if the only positive factor they have in common is \(1\).
In other words, two numbers are relatively prime if the only whole number that will divide both exactly is \(1\).
For example,
- Any pair of unequal prime numbers, like \(5\) and \(7\), is relatively prime.
- \(12\) and \(18\) are not relatively prime because you can evenly divide both by \(2\) (or \(3\) or \(6\)).
