Definition of Secant (Function)

The secant of an angle is one over its cosine.

In a right angled triangle, the secant of an angle is equal to the length of the hypotenuse divided by the length of the side opposite the angle.

We use the abbrevation \(\sec\) for secant, and write the formula:

\( \sec \theta = \dfrac{\text{hypotenuse}}{\text{adjacent}}\)
