Definition of Simplest Form (Algebra)

The simplest form of an algebraic expression is the one that is easiest to understand and use.

For example, the simplest form of the expresion \(3x + 2x - 4x\) is just \(x\).

Some common algebraic techniques that might help you to simplify an expression are:

  • Combining like terms, e.g. \(2x + 3x = 5x\).
  • Factorising.
  • Expanding can sometimes help you to identify and collect like terms.
  • Getting rid of fractions by mulitplying everything by the denominator of the fraction.
  • Recognising patterns like perfect squares and differences of two squares.
