Surd
Definition of Surd
A surd is a number that needs to be written using a root sign because it can't be simplified any further to remove it.
For example,
- \(\sqrt{5}\) (the square root of \(5\)) is a surd as it cannot be simplified any further.
- \(\sqrt{23}\) (the square root of \(23\)) is a surd as it cannot be simplified any further.
- \(\sqrt{9}\) (the squre root of \(9\)) is not a surd since it can be simplified to \(3\).
Surds can involve roots other than square roots such as cube roots or fourth roots, and so on.
