Substitution
Definition of Substitution

Substitution is the procedure, used in algebra, of replacing variables by numbers, or other expressions.
For example, if you want to find the value of \(3x + \dfrac{2}{x + 1}\) when \(x = 4\), you substitute by rubbing out \(x\) wherever it appears in the equation and replacing it by \(4\). This gives \(3(4) + \dfrac{2}{4 + 1}= 12 + \dfrac{2}{5} = 12\;\dfrac{2}{5}\) as the required value.
