Compass Points
Definition of Compass Points
Compass Points are the directions on a magnetic compass.
The four main compass points are North, South, East and West.
Half-way between these points lie Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest.
Many compasses show even more precise points (halway between the ones listed above) such as:
- NNE (north-north-east)
- NNW (north-north-west)
- WNW (west-north-west)
- WSW (west-south-west)
- SSW (south-south-west)
- SSE (south-south-east)
- ESE (east-south-east)
- ENE (east-north-east)
Compass points are used for map-reading, and for stating the directions of wind.
