Definition of Compass Points

Definition of Compass Points

Compass Points are the directions on a magnetic compass.

The four main compass points are North, South, East and West.

Half-way between these points lie Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest.

Many compasses show even more precise points (halway between the ones listed above) such as:

  • NNE (north-north-east)
  • NNW (north-north-west)
  • WNW (west-north-west)
  • WSW (west-south-west)
  • SSW (south-south-west)
  • SSE (south-south-east)
  • ESE (east-south-east)
  • ENE (east-north-east)

Compass points are used for map-reading, and for stating the directions of wind.
