Cotangent

Definition of Cotangent

Cotangent is one of the trigonometric ratios. It is the reciprocal of the tangent of the angle.

You can find the cotangent of an angle in a right angled triangle as follows:

Divide the length of the side of the triangle adjacent to the angle by the length of the side that is opposite the angle.

We use \(\cot \theta\) as short hand for the cotangent of the angle \(\theta\).

So, the formula is:

\( \cot\theta = \dfrac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{opposite}}.\)
